    SBB2 Theme C Lead Principal Investigator, Professor Paulo Monteiro, has been elected as a member of the 2020 National Academy of Engineering (NAE) class for his "contributions to the science and nanotechnology of concrete for sustainable construction and durable structures."

    In April 2019, Block71, a NUS Enterprise initiative that strategically partners with esteemed companies and government organizations, and accelerates start-ups, showcased SinBerBEST on its community feature.

    It focused on the unique, comprehensive approach of the program in using scientific research and innocative technology to enhance building energy efficiency  and building occupant productivity, thereby minimizing environmental impact.

    In August 2018, Channel NewsAsia highlighted key smart technologies developed by SinBerBEST that will be deployed in Singapore’s first energy generating building in collaboration with the Building Construction Authority (BCA).

The SinBerBEST Renewal program (SBB2) has been approved for funding by the National Research Foundation. It commenced on 1 June 2017 and will end on 31 May 2022.

Building on the considerable research investments and successes from the current SinBerBEST program, the SBB2 team will continue to innovate building technologies for energy efficiency and environmental sustainability, with renewed, greater emphases on technology transfer and commercialization, and closer collaboration with the Singapore agencies.

On 2 January 2017, Dr. Eicke Weber replaced Prof. Masayoshi Tomizuka as the BEARS Director. 

Dr. Weber was the Director of the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems ISE in Freiburg for 10 years. Prior to joining Fraunhofer ISE, Dr. Weber spent 23 years at the University of California at Berkeley as a Professor of Materials Science and, most recently, Chair of the Nanoscale Science and Engineering Graduate Group.

Nature.com's Scientific Reports recently published research findings from UC Berkeley, National University of Singapore, and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory on the characterization of photocatalytic TiO2 powder under different conditions. They used an advanced XPS with synchrotron radiation light source to explore the surface changes of bulk photocatalytic TiO2 powder under near ambient pressure with the sequential supply and termination of UV irradiation, water moisture, and oxygen.

In 2015, BEARS had its annual holiday party as organized by the Staff Welfare Committee in Singapore. It was a great success!

You Chun Er, a procurement expert with over 10 years of experience in purchasing hospital research supplies, has joined BEARS. With her help, BEARS has rolled out procurement training and related manuals.
