    Professor Spanos Wins 2016 Faculty Mentor Award

    Congratulations to Professors Costas Spanos, Chief Technology Officer of BEARS. He has been selected as the Graduate Assembly's 2016 Faculty Mentor Award winner.

    Each year, the Graduate Assembly solicits nominations for faculty and teaching staff that have shown an outstanding commitment to mentoring graduate students. The selection committee has found that Professor Spanos exemplified the principles of graduate student mentorship that lead to a successful graduate student experience.

    Nelumbo Wins Berkeley Cleantech University Prize

    Nelumbo has developed an omniphobic nanocoating which accelerates water shedding and reduces contaminant build-up on surfaces. We are using our OMNIPHOBE coating in air conditioning systems to raise efficiency by up to 25%. Our coating is 200X thinner than a human hair, conducts heat, and adds less than 2% to the manufacturing cost of an AC unit, allowing for cost-effective universal application on any scale or geometry.

    Prof. Eicke Weber Joins BEARS

    On 2 January 2017, Dr. Eicke Weber replaced Prof. Masayoshi Tomizuka as the BEARS Director. 

    Dr. Weber was the Director of the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems ISE in Freiburg for 10 years. Prior to joining Fraunhofer ISE, Dr. Weber spent 23 years at the University of California at Berkeley as a Professor of Materials Science and, most recently, Chair of the Nanoscale Science and Engineering Graduate Group.

  • Paper: Characterization of Photocatalytic Powder Paper: Characterization of Photocatalytic Powder's Scientific Reports recently published research findings from UC Berkeley, National University of Singapore, and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory on the characterization of photocatalytic TiO2 powder under different conditions. They used an advanced XPS with synchrotron radiation light source to explore the surface changes of bulk photocatalytic TiO2 powder under near ambient pressure with the sequential supply and termination of UV irradiation, water moisture, and oxygen.
