Prof. Costas Spanos Is the Interim BEARS Director and CEO
Prof. Costas Spanos is the Interim BEARS Director and CEO, effective immediately. BEARS is grateful to Dr. Eicke Weber, the outgoing BEARS Director and CEO, for his efforts to the organization.
Currently, Prof. Spanos is BEARS’ Chief Technical Officer, SinBerBEST (Building Efficiency and Sustainability in the Tropics) 2 Program Leader, and CITRIS (Center for Information Technology Research in the Interest of Society) as well as the Banatao Institute Director. In the past, he has served as BEARS’ CEO, the Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences (EECS) Department Chair, and the Associate Dean for Research in the College of Engineering at Berkeley.
As the Andrew S. Grove Distinguished Professor of EECS at UC Berkeley, Prof. Spanos performs research on statistical analysis applications in integrated circuit design and fabrication, and novel sensor and computer-aided technique development and implementation in semiconductor manufacturing. Also, he leverages statistical data-mining techniques for energy-efficiency usage. Prof. Spanos has published more than 200 refereed articles, has received several best paper awards, and has co-authored a textbook on semiconductor manufacturing.
In 1988, he joined the UC Berkeley faculty. Prof. Spanos received his master’s and doctoral degrees in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Carnegie Mellon University in 1981 and 1985.
